Kutai National Park is a lowland national park located on the east coast of Borneo Island, in the est Kalimantan Province of Indonesia, few minutes south of the equator. It is located north of the Mahakam river and includes several lakes: Danau Maau, Santan, Besar and Sirapan. It is adjacent to the towns of Bontang and Sangatta and 120 km north of the provincial capital Samarinda. There are several traditional bugis settlements within the national park.

The Kutai National Park extends over an area of 2,000 km², part of the former Kutai Game Reserve which has been protected since the 1970s. However this status did not prevent the logging of a third of the forest in subsequent years. In an attempt to prevent further deforestation the Kutai National Park was established in 1982. Nevertheless, the great Borneo fires of 1982/83 destroyed another 60% of the forest. Thus only 30% of the primary growth forest remains.The principal vegetation types include coastal mangrove forest, freshwater swamp forest and kerangas forest.

There have been 900 species of vegetation identified in the park. The park provides habitat to a wide range of mammals including  orangutan, Malayan Sun Bear, Sambar deer, Banteng, Marron Leaf Monkey, White-fronted Leaf Monkey, Hose’s Leaf Monkey, Proboscis Monkey, Borneo Gibbon, Clouded Leopard, Black Flying Squirrel, Marbled Cat, Flat-headed Cat, Yellow-throated Marten, Otter Civet, and Smooth-Coated Otter.

The number of orangutans recently decreased dramatically, from 600 recorded in 2004 to about 60 in 2009. So our duty to protect the rainforest and the ecosystem.

Tour Itenary :

Day 01  Balikpapan Airport - Samarinda - Sangata (L,D)
Upon arrival in Balikpapan International Airport in the morning flight, than meeting service with our speaking english naturalist guide, or our staff than transfer by bus or minibus, or Kijang car to Sangata via samarinda for driving about 4,5 hours. ( Distance from Balikpapan Airport to Samarinda is about 115km, Distance from Samarinda to Sangata is about 130km ). Lunch at local restaurant in Samarinda. Stop to see the mega structure of the islamic center, than continue drive to Sangata for another hours, upon arrival check in at hotel, Dinner at local restaurant in Sangata.
Day 02  Sangata - Kutai National Park - Treeking - Jungle Tent (B,L,D)
Early morning breakfast at hotel, afterward proced for drive to Kampung kabo, than by canoe cruise up the river of Mentoko to Kutai game reserve to exploring tropical rainforest of Kutai National Park and enjoy the panorama, short treeking available into the rainforest to see and explorer the wild orangutan, tropical tree's etc. Lunch and dinner provided at jungle tent area. Overnight at simple jungle tent that will prepare by our guide or overnight at the camp research if available.
Day 03  Kutai National Park - Sangata - Proced to Balikpapan Airport (B,L)
Early in the morning your second opportunity to go to treeking and plant a tropical fruit tree's at Kutai national park, afterward return to kampung kabo, than drive back for 4,5 hours to Balikpapan Airport for your onward flight in the afternoon. If time permited visit manggar of fisherman village, see the way of their life as they living nearest by of the Balikpapan beach area than visit Teritip Crocodile farm. Breakfast at tent and lunch at local restaurant.
